Abandoned AI Tools
Which open-source AI tools have stopped, gone into maintenance mode or slowed down? This list is built automatically from public GitHub data for every tool we track, and each stopped tool comes with actively maintained alternatives that do the same job.

Still developed, but with less than half of last year’s commits in the same 91 days. A slowdown can also mean a project has matured, moved to another repository or shifted work elsewhere, so check its announcements.

Abandoned AI tools: common questions
Which popular open-source AI tools have stopped?
Among the 104 tools we track, the most-starred projects that are archived, in maintenance mode or without commits in the last 91 days are GPT4All (no recent commits, 77.3k stars), MetaGPT (no recent commits, 70.9k stars), AutoGen (archived, 61.5k stars), as of 18 October 2026.
What do the statuses mean?
Archived: the repository is read-only on GitHub, or its README says the project has been archived. Maintenance mode: the README says the project is no longer actively developed. No recent commits: nothing landed on the default branch in the last 91 days. Slowing down: commits in the last 91 days are less than half of the same period a year earlier.
Should I stop using a tool that is archived?
Not necessarily right away: an installed version keeps working. But an archived project gets no fixes, including security fixes, and no support for new models or APIs, so plan a move before you depend on it for anything new.
How often is this list updated?
Every tool is re-checked through the GitHub API about every 10 minutes, and the README check for maintenance notices runs daily. A status can change in both directions: a project that resumes work moves back to active.
How this works: every status comes from public GitHub data (archived flag, commits on the default branch, and maintenance notices in the README). We do not judge the code itself, and we have not tested these tools for this page.
